How Long Does a Spray Tan Last? A Day-by-Day Guide

A professional spray tan typically lasts approximately seven to ten days. The exact length will depend on your skin, the formula used, your daily activities, and how you care for your color.

While every tan fades gradually as the skin’s surface cells naturally shed, proper aftercare can help your color remain smoother and more even throughout its life. Here is what to expect from your spray tan, from the initial development period through the final fade.

Your Spray Tan Timeline

Day 0: Application and Development

Immediately after your appointment, your spray tan begins developing. During this time, avoid showering, swimming, perspiring, and applying products to the skin.

Your rinse time will depend on the formula selected by your spray tan professional:

  • Tahitian Medium and Lava Dark generally require an eight-hour development period before rinsing.
  • Fiji Express and Espresso Rapid should be rinsed after two to three hours.

Always follow the exact rinse instructions provided by your technician. Rinsing an express formula earlier or later can affect the final depth of color.

Day 1: Your Color Continues Developing

After the initial rinse, your color may continue developing for up to 24 hours. Do not be concerned if an express tan initially appears lighter than expected. The final result will become more visible as development continues.

Keep the skin clean and treat it gently during this period. Avoid exfoliation, very hot showers, and activities that involve prolonged water exposure.

Days 2–4: Peak Color

Your spray tan will generally look its deepest and most even during the first several days after development. Keep showers brief and lukewarm, use a gentle body wash, and pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it with a towel.

Moisturize daily with Monoi de Tahiti Body Lotion. If your skin needs richer hydration, apply Monoi de Tahiti Body Butter, paying particular attention to dry areas such as the elbows, knees, ankles, and hands.

Days 5–7: Maintain Your Glow

Around day five, your color may begin to soften as part of the skin’s natural renewal process. Continue moisturizing consistently to support an even-looking fade.

To refresh your color, apply Tahitian Tan Extender evenly every other day or as needed. Its gentle level of DHA creates a light glow while helping prolong the appearance of your existing spray tan.

Do not exfoliate simply because you have reached day five. If your color still looks smooth and even, continue your normal aftercare routine.

Days 7–10: Fade or Refresh

By the end of the first week, your tan will gradually begin fading. The timing will vary depending on your skin, bathing habits, physical activity, and exposure to pools or hot tubs.

When you are ready to remove the remaining color, gently exfoliate with Bora Bora Body Polish and a Resurface Exfoliating Mitt. This creates a smooth, even base for your next professional spray tan or at-home application.

What Can Make a Spray Tan Fade Faster?

Several everyday habits can shorten the appearance of your tan:

  • Long or very hot showers
  • Frequent swimming or hot-tub use
  • Aggressive shaving
  • Body scrubs or exfoliating acids
  • Rough towels and vigorous rubbing
  • Tight clothing that repeatedly rubs the skin
  • Dryness and inconsistent moisturizing

You do not need to avoid your normal life to protect your tan. Gentle cleansing, daily hydration, and limited exfoliation are the most important habits for supporting an even fade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a professional spray tan last?

Most professional spray tans last approximately seven to ten days. Results vary depending on the formula, skin, activities, and aftercare routine.

When can I shower?

Follow the rinse time given by your spray tan professional. Traditional South Seas formulas generally require eight hours, while Fiji Express and Espresso Rapid should be rinsed after two to three hours.

Can I swim after a spray tan?

Wait until your tan has fully developed before swimming. Chlorine, salt water, and prolonged water exposure may cause the color to fade more quickly. Rinse with fresh water afterward, pat the skin dry, and moisturize.

Should I exfoliate on day five?

Only exfoliate when you are ready to remove fading or uneven color. If your tan still looks smooth, continue moisturizing and use Tahitian Tan Extender to refresh your glow.

Does a spray tan protect me from the sun?

No. A spray tan does not provide protection from UV exposure. Continue using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher whenever you are outdoors.

Keep Your Glow Looking Fresh

A spray tan will naturally fade as your skin renews, but the right routine can help it remain smooth and even for longer. Follow your rinse instructions, cleanse gently, moisturize daily, and introduce Tahitian Tan Extender as your color begins to soften.
