What is DHA?

DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is derived from sugar. It is the active ingredient in all self-tanners and spray tanning formulas and was approved by the FDA for use on the body in 1977. It’s safe and dermatologist recommended.

How long does it take DHA to develop?

DHA interacts with amino acids on the top layer of skin which produces the 7+ day browning effect. Once applied, DHA takes a full 8 hours to develop into its result. When DHA is developing, it’s important to refrain from water exposure or heavy perspiration.

After DHA has developed, how long do results last?

The effects of DHA naturally slough away as dead skin cells shed. It takes 7-10 days for the browning effect to fully disappear. Younger skin naturally sloughs the tan faster, closer to 7 days, whereas older skin is a bit slower, around 10 days. Using a gritty scrub or exfoliating mitt can help lift the dead skin cells faster.

Will I turn orange or have a faux appearance?

When used as recommended, South Seas products are formulated to give you that flawless beach-ready glow. To avert an orange or faux appearance, avoid over application. DHA mixes with amino acids on the top layer of skin and has a limit to its results; it cannot get excessively darker with repeated application.

Does DHA protect against UVA/UVB exposure?

A spray tan allows you to achieve beautiful, tanned skin without UVA/UVB exposure. DHA does not protect against the sun’s rays. Always apply SPF daily. DHA may offer slight protection against long UVA wavelengths, but not UVB or broad-spectrum rays.

What is the shelf-life?

Shelf-life varies by product. On the back of the bottle, look for a symbol that looks like an opened jar. The number inside indicates how many months the product is good for once opened.

Are self-tanners safe during pregnancy?

We recommend: 1) Checking with your doctor first; 2) Avoiding spray tanning and self-tanners during the first trimester; 3) Avoiding application on the chest after delivery while breastfeeding.

If a self-tanner isn't blended well or an area was missed, email us a photo of what you're experiencing — we can help you find a resolution.

How long does it take the tanning solution to develop?

Accepted Answer

All tanning formulas take a full 8 hours to develop. For Fiji Express Tan Solution: rinse at 2 hours for Tahitian results or 3.5 hours for Lava results. After rinsing, the tan will continue developing for the full 8 hours. Call us for guidance when mixing or customizing solutions.

How long do spray tan results last?

Spray tan results last 7–10 days. Younger skin tends to fade faster (around 7 days), while older skin may last closer to 10 days. Exfoliation can lift the dead skin cells and bring the tan off more quickly.

How do I ensure my clients won’t have an orange or faux appearance?

Accepted Answer

Avoid over-application. When spraying 4–6 inches from the body (and 8–10 inches from face, hands, and feet), 1–2 ounces per tan is recommended. Less is more on fair complexions. Call us for personalized application guidance.

Should I recommend an SPF after a spray tan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SPF should always be recommended because spray tanning and self-tanners do not protect against UVA/UVB rays. Coral SPF 30 Lotion pairs well with spray tans and does not strip color or leave white cast.

How much should I apply on my clients?

Accepted Answer

With an HVLP tanning system, spray 4–6 inches from the body and 8–10 inches from the face, hands, and feet. Typically 1–2 ounces is enough for most clients, though stage competitors may require more.

What is the tanning solution shelf-life?

Accepted Answer

Tanning solutions have a 6-month shelf-life symbol, but can last up to 2 years. Cosmetic bronzers (FD&C colors) begin to oxidize after 6–9 months, causing undertone shifts. DHA itself can last up to 2 years. Bronzer shifts can be corrected with Bali Bronzer Drops.

Can spray tanning stain clothing or sheets?

Cosmetic bronzer rub-off may occur, especially if sleeping in a spray tan. Any transfer usually rinses out using a cold wash cycle.

Can tanning solution formulas be mixed?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We recommend 50/50 ratios, but you can always call our office for personalized recommendations based on your clientele.

Is spray tanning safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Professionals should: 1) Have clients check with their doctor; 2) Avoid spray tanning during the first trimester; 3) After delivery, cover the chest area due to breastfeeding.

Can clients with vitiligo get a spray tan?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Areas with lost pigmentation still respond to DHA. To help blend patches, dab tanning solution on lighter areas with a makeup sponge before spraying the full tan.

What if my client has tinea versicolor?

Accepted Answer

Tinea versicolor may appear more visible after spray tanning because it highlights light and dark patches. Spray tanning cannot correct it, but cosmetic bronzer (like Island Glow Body Bronzer) can help visually blend uneven areas.

Question 22

I've made a mistake during a spray tan — what can I do?

Accepted Answer

If over-applied, overlapped, or applied to palms, have your client soak in a hot bath for 15–20 minutes, then use a dry rag, loofah, or scrub to lift the color. You can also email us a photo for guidance.
