Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the active ingredient in sunless tanning products, creating a temporary tan without sun exposure. Approved by the FDA in 1977 for external use, DHA is a sugar-derived compound that reacts with amino acids in the outer layer of the skin through the Maillard reaction, producing brown pigments called melanoidins. This process mimics a natural tan without harmful UV radiation, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Since DHA only affects the surface layer of the skin, the tan fades gradually as dead skin cells shed, typically lasting 7-10 days.
